My art is transcendence, hinting at the unseen story”
Gordon R Carmichael’s artwork develops in a natural and organic way, almost like something growing. Rather than meticulously planning each detail, they work instinctively, allowing marks to emerge on the canvas through intuition and spontaneity. Their inspiration extends beyond traditional subjects, drawing from the unseen forces that connect all things.
Fascinated by how our senses shape our world experience, Carmichael seeks to transform the canvas into a kind of gateway—an invitation to explore deeper connections. A key element of their process involves a Rorschach-type approach with the mediums, by applying pressure to guide the formation and creating symmetrical patterns reminiscent of those found in nature, with the addition and subtraction of layers and raised textures creating pathways that lead the eye across the surface.
The interplay between rich metallic pigments and light, contrasted with flat colours, creates depth and a sense of freedom. The organic forms convey both the vibrancy of life and the transient nature of existence. Within these works, there is a dialogue with the environment that extends beyond the physical world, hinting at a bigger picture or unseen presence and emphasising the connection between the creation and its maker.
